Jump Start Your Career

Whether you're just embarking on your career as an artist or you've been in the field for a while and need some new inspiration, here are some tips for getting a new jump-start.

1. Get the information you need
The best way to get the information you need is to ask questions. Access the resources around you to get the answers you need. Talk to other artists, attend workshops, and utilize on-line web-boards. Do your research.

2. Listen and Observe
You can learn a lot by simply listening and observing. There are many opportunities in this City to attend events, lectures and showing. Learn by watching.

3. Identify the "Go-To" People
Identify people you can go to for advice. Tap into their experience and expertise.

4. Get Organized
Good organization is great for any career. It is especially helpful when you are juggling several projects. Establish good habits and commit to them; make a to-do list, prioritize your activities and stay on track. This will make everything else easier and project a professional image.

5. Be Enthusiastic
The more interest you show, the more likely people will want to work with you.

6. Take the Initiative
Ask for involvement. Your willingness to be part of a project might open the door to some great learning opportunities. Go after the work that you want. Don't wait for things to come to you. Create opportunities and let people know your interests.

7. Quality, Not Quantity
Quality work is going to take you a lot further in your career than mere quantity. Don't accept every job that comes your way just so you can add another project to your resume. Get involved with projects that you can be proud of. Pay attention to details and always strive to do the best work you can.

8. Take Responsibility for Mistakes
Despite all your efforts, mistakes happen. No one is perfect, so don't dwell on it. Simply acknowledge it at once, correct it quickly, then move on.

9. Maintain Great Communication
Communication is vital. If there is a delay on a project, people appreciate knowing as soon as possible. Likewise, if you have great news to share, don't be afraid to let people know about it.

10. Treat Everyone with Respect
Not only does this create great working relationships, but you also never know who might be able to help you out in the future. Stepping on someone to get ahead might only come back to haunt you later on.

11. Carpe Diem!
If someone offers you an opportunity, seize it!

12. Make Time for Yourself
You've got to make time for yourself if you want to be able to do your best work.

13. Keep a Sense of Humor
Don't take things too seriously. When you have a tough day and things don't go as planned, keep it in perspective. Look for the humor. Try to laugh at yourself.

14. Strive for Balance
Don't let yourself get overwhelmed. Take each day as it comes. Life is about more than just your career. The more balance you have in your life, the more at peace you'll be with your work. Staying healthy, getting plenty of rest and relaxation and maintaining positive relationships are vital to your well-being and beneficial for your work.

15. Enjoy!
After years of study and hard work, you are an artist. Enjoy it.
