Get the Word Out About Your Arts Events

Want to get the word out about your arts or cultural event or exhibit? Here are some free places to post information and local arts media contacts. As you work regularly with editors, reporters and critics, get to know each person's personal preference regarding contacts, e.g. some prefer e-mail, some prefer faxes.

On-line Events Calendars:
More people are accessing event information on-line. Each has a slightly different way to submit information, so just follow the directions on each Web site. Some local places to start:

Two sites that list various event calendars can be found at:

Major Newspapers
Send your press releases to the local newspapers. Here are some of the dailies and weekly papers to begin with. (For details about what to include in a press release, see the Arts Resource Network.)

Radio
Most radio stations accept a written public service announcement (PSA); some will take a pre-recorded PSA. Check the Web site of the radio station you think best matches your audience. Many stations belong to the Puget Sound Broadcasters Association or Washington State Association of Broadcasters. Both organizations list links to their members. KUOW and KPLU are our two local public radio stations; both cover the arts and culture.

Television
Seattle Channel, the City's municipal television channel, is committed to covering local arts and culture. Submit information well in advance of the event to Seattle Channel. Send releases to local TV newsrooms via e-mail:

KOMO-TV's Northwest Afternoon provides free Public Service Announcements for community groups. However you must bring a group of 15 or more people to be in their audience. In exchange, one person in your group will tape an announcement of your event to air during the program. It reaches a lot of people throughout Western Washington. To sign up for this, go to KOMO's Web site.

If you'd like to develop a broader media list, check out the Puget Sound Media Directory.
